Yes, this happens all the time. Racism is built into the DNA of America for sure. But it exists globally. And acts of overt racism are definitely on the rise. But racism has always been there, just buried beneath the surface until someone like Donald came along and pushed it up and out. There are also many white people who believe they aren't racist but who have lots of unconscious bias because of the systemic nature of racism.

Ideally, (that is, once I got over being pissed off), if I were in that situation, I'd want to use it as a teaching moment to reveal the woman's unconscious bias to her. It sounds like she hasn't been around a lot of Black folk and gets her knowledge of them via the biased media. She may be open to learning; she may not be. But reacting in anger, while totally understandable, isn't the end point.

And you don't have to be Black to reveal this woman's unconscious bias to her. It's informed white people who have to start speaking up when they witness this kind of behavior.

This brother in arms has some suggestions on how white people can help in the fight against racism. And he oughtta know; he used to be racist - https://youtu.be/XUhbDZ4jwCQ
