Oh my goodness! This piece brings back so many memories. I was in graduate school in DC in 1975 at Georgetown U when our Black Student Alliance invited Dick Gregory to speak. Based on the information he provided, my boyfriend at the time and I decided to become "lacto-ovo" vegetarians (no meat or fish, but we did eat eggs and dairy). I lasted about 8 years on the diet, but even after returning to meat, I was very conscious of my health. I'm now a vegan and I attribute those years as a vegetarian to making the transition to "no meat, eggs, or dairy at all" a lot easier. Thanks so much for this retrospective on the life of an amazing man.
